I first blogged about perchlorate contamination in drinking water back in July with EPA Finds Toxic Rocket Fuel Ingredient in Water (this post includes a video).
Now, as reported by USA Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has decided that this dangerous chemical can remain in our water.
Perchlorate, an ingredient in rocket fuel, has been found in at least 35 states at levels high enough to interfere with thyroid function and poses developmental health risks. Studies suggest that perchlorate may lead to lower IQ levels as well.
Despite the evidence that perchlorate is harmful to your health, the EPA announced that it can remain in the water supply. Environmentalists complain that the EPA was pressure by the Pentagon; if perchlorate contamination were regulated by the EPA, then the Pentagon could face astronomical clean-up costs.
“This is a widespread contamination problem, and to see the Bush EPA just walk away is shocking,” said Senator Barbara Boxer of California.
Larry Siegel of the Center for Public Environment Oversight adds, “This is an unconscionable decision not based upon science or law but on concern that a more stringent standard could cost the government significantly.”
Perchlorate contamination is particularly worrisome in California and the Southwest, where the chemical has been found in groundwater and the Colorado River.
Because of a lack of action from the federal government, the states of California and Massachusetts have set their own limits for perchlorate contamination in drinking water.
